This video shows just how mental the Reykjavikians are :) ... (Sorry, the camera work is not fantastic).

My gods - that's crazy!!! Unbelievably so!!!

Imagine if any war vets are hanging around Reykjavik at that time. The flashbacks wouldn't be too nice...

So do they just let anyone set off fireworks?? It looks like every house gets to set off their own display!!

Argh! That's just madness! Thanks for the vid!!! Great to watch!!

no, not anyone can buy fireworks - you have to be over 16 to buy them, and they recommend that small children wear safefty goggles. Apparently all the charity groups sell them, like the scouts, emergency rescue groups (haha!) and so on... But seriously, yes, everybody does fireworks!!

Wow, wow and more wows.....

Very spectacular indeed. What a great way to launch the New Year. Lucien will have memories of The Netherlands, no doubt, where everyone simply "lets their hair down" on NY.

And that... was the *subdued* version of Reykyavik fireworks. To quote the Iceland Weather Report blog:

"Yes, dear readers, fireworks are sold freely to the general public up here in the days between Christmas and New Year's, although FORTUNATELY there is an age limit of 18 years so of course there is NO WAY for underaged kids to get their hands on them, just as there is NO WAY for them to get their hands on any liquor for New Year's Eve. Meaning that those explosions are almost all generated by adults with their full wits about them [heheh - yah right]."

... Tania, what the hell have you gotten your self into there? Oh, and Ho Ho Ho. ;-)

according to our junk mail, the age limit is 16, not 18... but who's counting?
